Dealing with the “little friends”

Back in Juba and after my failed attempt to extract a jigger (I count 5) I decide to go to a clinic. Im a bit worried as Ive described what I have to the driver and he has a look of bemused confusion. “You have chickens?” Me, “No, jiggers”.  Him, “Chickens”….”No, little worms, jiggers”. Him,…

Behind the wire

My safe harbour wall has been breached. The place I retreat to from the crazy city of Nairobi has been tainted. On Saturday night at 2am in the morning my mobile phone rang. It’s the heart stopping moment that we all dread….wrong number? No. It was my landlady in the next door house telling me…

Ive heard that weddings in Narobi can be a lavish show of glitz and glamour which can near bankrupt the family. They hire Mercedes for the family, order huge opulent cakes, dress in designer meringues…

Off road

For the first time since we arrived we took a road trip out of Nairobi. It felt like breaking a curfew when we snook out of work at midday on Friday, long before the arteries out of town become gridlocked. The highway is a challenge to drive as the poorly laid tarmac is moulded into…

Almost Birthday

The tradition in the office is to celebrate all the birthdays in that month at the end of the month. My birthday is tomorrow and so a joint celebration was planned yesterday.  They bought a cake, iced my name and sang happy birthday for me. Unfortunately no one told it was happening and I already…
