When space and weight is a premium how do you decide what is essential to start your new life? This week we have been faced with that dilemma. Packing up our belongings into two suitcases and three boxes has been a challenge. I was thinking to myself as we lugged all our baggage across Heathrow, did I really need that extra pair of shoes?
Instead of freighting our belongings out to Kenya we decided to take everything as accompanied luggage. This avoids any delays in importing and paying up to 100% tax on your items. What we didn’t know was that our plane ticket from Manchester was in two parts. Off came our luggage at Heathrow, back to check-in and another load of excess baggage charges to pay. Thanks to the man on the Heathrow train that helped us with our bags when we changed terminals.
We will be staying in the Tearfund flat until we find something more permanent. It’s got everything we need including wifi, TV and hot water. TV will be a bit of a novelty as we haven’t had one for the last six years of our marriage.
We are now in Nairobi complete with luggage intact. Tired, jetlagged but content. Think we will go out and explore our local area. Now where’s that extra pair of shoes I packed??
